For those eating more the health risk was virtually eliminated if they ate plenty of fruit and veg.

Canadian experts studied 95,000 people in 18 countries.

Prof Andrew Mente said: “Our bodies need essential nutrients like sodium.”

The NHS says adults should eat no more than 6g of salt a day.

Too much is linked to high blood pressure.
