She was on Channel 4 News last night to discuss Mr Johnson’s controversial comments about the burqa, but her own attempt to mimic his mannerisms ended up causing quite a stir.

After he was called to apologise by the Prime Minister, the Ealing MP said: “It’s this thing about not taking stuff seriously, you know, the Boris of old.”

She then launched into the impression, waving her arms and speaking in a faux-posh voice boomed: “Oh sorry I just shagged your wife, I didn’t realise…”

Quickly catching herself, Ms Huq apologised, saying: “Sorry, you know – with that kind of approach.”

Presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy stepped in, saying; “I’m not sure that kind of language is ok at this time, let’s not have any more of it.”

It was quickly shared on social media, with one person saying she “oes a better blustering Boris Johnson than BoJo himself”.

Another called it “hilarious” and the “best thing on TV all night”, while her Labour MP colleague Stephen Doughty called Ms Huq a “legend”.

Fellow Channel 4 presenter Cathy Newman tweeted: “Blimey I was just relaxing into my seat in the studio when Rupa Huq made a gag about Boris Johnson ‘s***ging’.

“Am now sitting bolt upright...”

The MP later tried to clarify what she was attempting to do, writing that she meant to say: "The Boris of old was mildly amusing but the loveable rogue act's worn thin and now he's dangerously pandering to the far right."

She said she never got to end her sentence, but thanked Mr Guru-Murthy “for stepping in before I tried to throw in some Latin to top it off”.

And Ms Huq added in another tweet that: “Boris and me have history - his clown persona has more sinister side.”

He comments came as pressure mounted on the Conservative leadership to decide whether to take action against Mr Johnson.

Two days ago party chairman Brandon Lewis ordered him to apologise for saying women in full face veils look like “letterboxes” and “bank robbers”.

But Mr Johnson has been maintaining his silence, and the Sun revealed Tory chiefs have been accused of “blinking” in a bitter stand-off for not daring to formally discipline him, despite receiving “dozens” of complaints about him.

And ally of the ex-Mayor of London said: “They’ve picked a fight with Boris but they don’t want to finish it, in case he is found innocent and wins.”
