What happened to Joel Urhie in the Deptford house fire?

Schoolboy Joel Urhie, seven, could not be saved as flames consumed his family's home in Deptford, South-East London, in the early hours of August 7.

Neighbours said he was trapped inside as his blood-soaked mother screamed "my son is in there".

Mum Sophie is recovering in hospital with her 18-year-old daughter Sarah.

Sophie and Sarah were forced to fling themselves from the upstairs windows as the house became a "fireball".

Close friend Grace Gbenedio, 56, told Sun Online: "It was terrible. The fire was really burning.

"The mum collapsed on my lap. She was in a bad state. Her head was bleeding, her head was full of blood. She couldn’t stand.

"She collapsed on me when a fireball - the last blast of the window - blew out the house.

"She was crying for her son. Saying ‘help my son, he’s inside.’

"My daughter was holding Sarah. She was saying ‘my brother, my brother, he’s in there'."

Joel's dad John, who did not live at the the house, rushed to the scene after a phone call and was told his son was dead.

He paid tribute to the "sweet" and "intelligent" young boy, adding: "It's terrible, the pain we cannot forget".

What caused the fire? Was it arson?

Police have said the "suspicious" fire is being treated as an arson attack. Investigators are said to have established the blaze was started with an accelerant.

One theory is that a gang targeted Joel's older brother Sam, 21, who had lived at the house for a short time after his release from jail.

A friend of the family said Sam broke down at the scene and said: "It should have been me. Why not me to die."

A friend said: “This might be because of something Sam did. He was involved with the wrong people. He used to live there before he went to prison and was there for a bit afterwards when he came out.

“He was apparently involved in gangs and stuff and it might be the case the people who did it were after him.”

Detective Superintendent Jane Corrigan said: "At this early stage there are a number of possible lines of enquiry.

"However officers retain an open mind with regard to motive."

She added: "We continue to work with our London Fire Brigade partners to establish the circumstances around this tragic death.

"Our thoughts are with the child's family and specialist officers are providing them with support and will be keeping them informed as the investigation progresses."

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters were called to the scene.

London Fire Brigade said the ground floor of the home had been badly damaged by the blaze, as well as the whole of the first floor and the stairs from the ground to the first floor.

It said: "Two women jumped from first floor level shortly before the first firefighters arrived at scene.

"They were both treated at the scene by firefighters and London Ambulance Service crews."

On August 11 cops arrested two men on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

The men, aged 21 and 29, were arrested at residential addresses in south London. They have been taken to a south London police station, where they currently remain
