UK summer heatwave to RETURN next week with temperatures of 30C+ predicted… as August is expected to be a scorcher too

HEAVY thunderstorms last night brought a dramatic end to the summer heatwave – but temperatures will soar again next week.
There were more than 14,000 lightning strikes last night as torrential rain poured down, ending the weeks-long drought in the south east.
It sent temperatures plummeting this weekend and another band of heavy rain is forecast for tomorrow.
The Met Office has issued a series of yellow warnings for rain, thunderstorms and wind this weekend.
Last night’s thunderstorms caused fresh travel hell for thousands of holidaymakers on flights, ferries and Eurotunnel trains today.
Thousands of passengers complained of five hour queues to cross the Channel and chaotic scenes at Stansted Airport waiting for delayed flights.
An amber severe weather warning for Northern Ireland was issued, with the Met saying torrential downpours were affecting some areas on Saturday afternoon.
It also said thunderstorms in north-east Scotland could cause disruption on Saturday, while power cuts, sea swells and damage to campsites were possible in south Wales and south-west England in the early hours of Sunday.
Will Lang, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "While Saturday will be a pleasant, but breezy day in many places, we are in for a change on Sunday with a wet and windy day in stark contrast to what has been typical recently.
"We have already issued a Met Office weather warning for the impacts of wind and rain in south-west England and south Wales.
"Southerly winds will gust at around 35-40 mph and up to 50mph for exposed coasts and hills.
"Rain will be most persistent over hills and parts of the Brecon Beacons and Dartmoor could see as much as 60-80mm of rain."
After a grey and gloomy Sunday, the Met Office said the heat will build again next week with temperatures expected to creep into the 30s.
Thursday saw the highest temperature recorded in the UK since 2015, with temperatures in Faversham reaching 35.5C.
Forecasters had predicted maximum temperatures of 37C yesterday, but the hottest it got was 34.7C at Tibenham Airfield in Norfolk.
But dramatic storms then swept east bringing cooler temperatures and torrential downpours.
Singer Sir Tom Jones was last night forced to cancel a concert due to the wet weather.
York Racecourse tweeted the show had been called off because of the "thunder and lightning storms".
Meanwhile Standon Calling Festival, in Hertfordshire, was temporarily shut for two hours as heavy rain ground the event to a halt.
Authorities have told the public to take care when swimming in rivers, lakes and the sea after police named the third person to have died this week after going swimming as 15-year-old Ben Quartermaine.
The teenager went missing in Clacton, Essex, after getting into difficulties in the sea on Thursday.
Thames Valley police recovered the body of a man from the Jubilee river in Slough on the same day, and emergency services found the body of a 17-year-old boy who disappeared after getting into difficulty in a quarry lake in Bishops Itchington, near Leamington Spa, on Friday.
