A CHILD spotted lying on a train platform with his head dangling over the edge as an adult watches on has sparked outrage.
The photo of the lad and two young girls kneeling and crouching just behind him went viral on social media with nearly 3,000 people sharing it.
British Transport Police have confirmed they are making enquiries as part of an investigation.
Tim Brown who took the photo and posted it on Facebook described the scene at Trowbridge railway station in Wiltshire on Saturday as "absolutely unbelievable".
He said when he spoke to the adult the reply he got was that "the trains not due".
Mr Brown, from Birmingham, added: "When I pointed out there may be others ie freight, empties, unscheduled etc the reply was 'The next one's not till 16.38'.
"After speaking to the guard and explaining to the man that people are seriously injured and die doing this I was told (By the not so responsible adult) I was a do gooder and the lad just wanted to look at the track.....I can only try."
Nearly 2,000 people commented on the post with disbelief with many saying it as "insane" and "stupid".
A spokesman for BTP said today: "Officers have been made aware of photograph on social media which shows a child in a dangerous position on the platform of Trowbridge station yesterday afternoon (Saturday)."
"We are making enquiries into this incident as part of an investigation. No arrests have been made. We ask the public to take care when using the rail network, and to follow the safety guidelines provided by rail operators to avoid risking lives or serious injury."

They asked anyone with information which could help the investigation to text 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40, quoting 393 of 21 July.
A spokesman for Great Western Railway (GWR), which manages Trowbridge railway station, said: "Trains often pass through railway stations without stopping, and without appearing on any timetable, at very high speeds.
"Stay safe by keeping back from the platform edge and behind the yellow line at all times, and listen out for announcements."
