Where is Helsinki?

Helsinki is the capital of Finland and the country's most densely populated city.

It's located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland and is the seat of the Uusimaa region in the south.

The city has previously hosted major Cold War summits between leaders such as Leonid Breznhev and Gerald Ford in 1975 and Mikhail Gorbachev and George Bush Snr in 1990.

It is also the site where Boris Yeltsin met Bill Clinton in 1997.

What's the time difference between Helsinki and the UK?

Helsinki is two hours ahead of the UK.

The UK is currently on British Summertime, which is Greenwich Mean Time, plsu one hour.

Why is Donald Trump meeting Vladimir Putin in Helsinki?

Helsinki is often used as a host city for talks between major nations.

The capital played host to major Cold War summits between leaders such as Leonid Breznhev and Gerald Ford in 1975 and Mikhail Gorbachev and George Bush Snr in 1990 before going on to host a meeting between Boris Yeltsin and Bill Clinton in 1997.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said in a statement that Russia and the US had only been in touch with him about the summit last week, adding that he hoped Putin and Trump would discuss arms control and pay heed to his own concerns about tensions in the Baltic Sea region.

The meeting is said to have no set agenda but will focus on bilateral issues affecting the US and Russia.

Trump's National Security Adviser John Bolton has already held preparatory talks with Russian officials in Moscow.

The US president said that he would discuss Syria, Ukraine and “many other subjects” with Putin in Helsinki.

Trump is also expected to raise the issue of 12 Russians being charged with hacking the 2016 US elections.
