Bookies slash odds on ANOTHER snap General Election after Boris and David Davis quit – and Labour take poll lead

BOOKIES have slashed odds on a 2018 General Election election - as Labour take a lead in a new poll.

FRESH fears of a General Election have erupted today following David Davis' and Boris Johnson's dramatic resignation.

The Brexit Secretary's departure, followed by Boris this afternoon, is a huge loss for Theresa May just ahead of a crucial week for her leadership.

The Prime Minister is set to try and sell her Chequers summit deal to grumbling Tory MPs later today, has a key Nato summit on Wednesday, and will host Donald Trump in Britain on Thursday and Friday.

Ladbrokes slashed their odds from 11/2 on Sunday night to 5/2 for another vote before the year is out - and then reduced it AGAIN down to 7/4.

2018 is now the most likely year in the betting, ahead of 2019, and the PM is 1/2 to quit this year.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said:  "It's all change in the Conservative camp and our traders now make a 2018 General Election more likely than ever as a result."

Betfair followed suit, slashing the odds of an election this year down to 6/4, with Mrs May 2/1 to go this week.

But Jeremy Corbyn could take advantage of the fractures in the Tory party,  as his party moves ahead in a new poll.

The latest study from Survation - one of the only polling companies to get last year's election right - puts Labour up two points to 40 per cent, with the Tories on 38 per cent.

The news will worry MPs who will fear another election could be on the cards.

Already it is rumoured that more Tories will send letters of no-confidence in the Prime Minister later today, in response to her plans to soften down Brexit.

They need 48 to officially trigger a leadership contest.

But the poll was done last week, meaning the impact of Mr Davis' shock resignation could still have an impact on polls in the coming days.

However, a separate poll of Tory members showed that six in ten of them don't back Mrs May's blueprint for Brexit either.

Just 31 per cent said it would be a good deal for Britain, ConservativeHome revealed.

Two thirds of MPs would need to back a motion in the House of Commons to officially vote for an election.

Labour MPs might want one if they believe they have a fighting chance of electing Jeremy Corbyn in as Prime Minister.

But Tories scared they might lose more seats after last year's disastrous election gamble will be unlikely to back such a move unless they were confident they had a good leader in place that could beat him.
