FUEL giant BP was forced to close a number of its petrol stations on Sunday after a computer glitch with card payments.
Motorists could only pay for petrol with cash at the BP garages that did manage to remain open.
The company apologised to customers as it took to social media to alert drivers to the problem.
Posting on Twitter, BP UK said: "Our UK retail sites are currently unable to take card payments.
"We are working to rectify this as a matter of urgency & would like to apologise for any inconvenience this has caused our customers.
"The majority of our sites are accepting cash payments but a few stations have shut."
Highways England said the problem affected "all motorway service areas with BP fuel stations".
The problem started at around 7pm. BP has 1,280 stations across the UK.
By 10pm they said the problem had been resolved.
Taking to Twitter again, BP UK said: "BP can confirm our sites have returned to normal service and are now once again accepting card payments.
