Last month, it emerged that Swift was hospitalised with an unspecified "life-threatening" condition.
It is unclear how he died but many musicians have paid tribute to the accomplished bassist and drummer.
Dan Auerbach, his Black Keys bandmate, wrote on Instagram: "Today the world lost one of the most talented musicians I know."

Swift was a former member of indie rock band The Shins and a touring bassist for alternative rock group The Black Keys.
He was a part of The Shins - formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1996 - between the years of 2011 and 2016.
Swift performed keyboards, piano, organ, synthesizers, percussion, drone box and backing vocals.
