Campaigners whinged in an open letter: “Zulu, with its inaccurate portrayal of historical events and its distortions and racist overtones, could have a negative effect on relationships within the changing and richly diverse communities in Folkestone.”

But locals branded the 28-signature open letter to the Kent town’s mayor Ann Berry “ridiculous”.

One called it “spineless liberals moaning about a 55-year-old film”.

Another blasted it as “idiotic”.

And one said: “The British Empire wasn’t perfect, but it was a lot better than most other nations at the time.”

Zulu — where Michael Caine’s character is told there are “Zulus, thousands of them” — is based on the 1879 Battle of Rorke’s Drift.

About 150 Brits fought off 4,000 Zulu warriors for two days, earning 11 Victoria Crosses.

Organiser Tom Langlands says Saturday’s showing at Folkestone’s Silver Screen Cinema will go ahead.

He added yesterday: “Everyone is welcome to attend and express their opinion.”
