Businesses can have concerns over the Prime Minster’s Brexit plans, but should really be angry at Brussels

BUSINESSES have a right to speak out about the Government’s Brexit plans.

But they should be far angrier about how Brussels has spent the last two years.

It’s not the British that have responded to every proposal with a “non” or “nein” and a spiteful background briefing.

Big businesses taking potshots at the Prime Minister could use their time better by pushing the EU to work on the trade deal we’ve consistently asked for.

One that allows our businesses to trade with their European partners — but also one that means BMWs can be sold on British forecourts, too.

Rather than ramping up Project Fear: The Sequel, bosses must demand that Brussels starts negotiating in good faith to keep trade ties with the world’s fifth largest economy.

It might be useful for them to remind Brussels that if the EU “punishes” Britain with tariffs and restrictions, the UK Government would have to hit back.

Business leaders keep banging on about “certainty”.

Well, we are CERTAIN Britain will succeed outside the European Union.

We’re CERTAIN we’ll be an open and global trading nation — as shown by Parliament, we hope, finally approving Heathrow’s expansion later today.

And we’re CERTAIN the EU has been more interested in self-preservation than a deal since we voted to leave.

Brussels bureaucrats must be warned that their precious project isn’t more important than the European economy.

Hope on homes

FINALLY, it looks like thinking Tories are cottoning on to the housing crisis.

But it needs leadership from the top to solve our biggest domestic concern.

MP Neil O’Brien’s scheme may not be perfect. Radical change to planning law is needed too. But at least it’s ambitious.

The Prime Minister must stick this at the top of her agenda.

She’s nervous about annoying her voters in the shires. But if the Conservatives don’t fix this, there will be an entire generation who will never trust the party. They simply must rebuild the housing ladder.

Our housing crunch has been decades in the making. With brave leadership the PM could go a long way to fixing it.

For her party and the country, she must get on with it.

Pride of Lions

WELL, that was an England performance to make the nation roar with pride.

This team is a delight to support. They’re young, hungry and fearless — and John Stones has scored more than Neymar, Messi and Muller combined.

There are parallels to the heroics of 1966, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Whatever happens next, this was a day that long-suffering Three Lions fans will never forget.
