Two jabs of tuberculosis vaccine can ‘nearly wipe out Type 1 diabetes’
TYPE 1 diabetes can be reduced to almost undetectable levels by just two jabs of a tuberculosis vaccine, it has been reported.
One dose of the BCG vaccine followed by a booster shot a month later reportedly reduced some sufferers’ blood sugar levels to near normal within three years.
US researchers claimed the effects lasted for a futher five years and said the “exciting” results could lead to a “major advance” in treatment.
Tests on mice showed the vaccine could also help to treat type 2 diabetes, according to an eight-year study published in the journal NPJ Vaccines.
About 400,000 people with type 1 diabetes in the UK currently require daily injections of insulin to prevent them falling into a lethal coma, The Telegraph said.
