THE SUN SAYS

The Government should defy Brussels laws and kick out EU criminals and rapists after Brexit

WHAT has possessed the Government to consider letting convicted rapists from the EU stay here for life post-Brexit?

It may comply with Brussels’ rules. So what? Why stick by those after we leave? As an independent nation we should kick out serious criminals we are not bound to keep.

Why too are we unilaterally offering all EU nationals arriving by 2021 the “lifetime right” to bring their entire family?

What is Brussels offering in return?

The Sun is not against immigration. We want only to control the numbers while picking the most skilled migrants to boost our economy. But yet again our Government is rolling over and volunteering new concessions to the EU.

Its faith that Brussels will look kindly on our generosity is staggeringly naive.

Are the other 27 EU countries now busily reassuring our expats or extending open invitations to Brits? Are they hell.

Just as depressingly, the Home Office hasn’t a clue how many EU citizens will take us up on our offer. Could be three million, they say. Or nearer four.

What’s another million, eh?

Their indifference is jaw-dropping.

Aid for NHS

CHANCELLOR Philip Hammond must look at the dramatically lower borrowing figures and rule out tax rises to fund the NHS. They will hurt the economy and do immense political damage to the Tories.

The nation has endured years of belt-tightening and is taxed to the hilt.

There is clearly room to borrow a little more and find savings elsewhere. The first option being the £14billion foreign aid budget which even Aid Secretary Penny Mordaunt admits is indefensible.

The Tories should cut it by two-thirds and give the lot to health. But it would need a law change they won’t entertain.

So they must find imaginative ways to use aid to bail out other departments.

The Tories must not impose new taxes. Especially while they still dole out our money to corrupt regimes, vanity projects and charities staffed by sex predators.

The public won’t wear it.

Trump card

DONALD Trump aims to strong-arm Nato members into paying more into the pot — with the same brinkmanship he used on North Korea. He has a point too.
It is high time Europe’s biggest economies pulled their weight, as Britain does. They are currently kept safe by long-suffering American taxpayers.

But the President will be making a monumental and historic error if he undermines Nato’s solidarity. It alone has kept peace in Europe and deterred Russia since World War Two.

Britain MUST help keep this vital alliance alive. Not just by maintaining our defence spending but, with the threat from Putin so high, increasing it.

Our forces must not be cut further.
