Thomas Markle reveals how Prince Harry told him to be open to Donald Trump as pair talked Brexit and politics
MEGHAN Markle's Dad has revealed that Prince Harry told him to be open about Donald Trump and Brexit.
In his first interview since missing his daughter's wedding, Thomas Markle gave an astonishing insight into the Duke of Sussex's political views - which could spark a diplomatic row.
The 73-year-old told ITV's Good Morning Britain today: "Our conversation was, I was complaining about not liking Donald Trump, he said 'give Donald Trump a chance'.
He added: "I sort of disagreed with that. But I still like Harry. That was his politics, I have my politics."
On whether the Prince was a Trump supporter, Mr Markle said: "I would hope not now, but at the time he might have been."
And on Brexit, the American told hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: "It was just a loose conversation about, something we have to try... I think he (the Duke of Sussex) was open to the experiment."
The news could cause trouble for the Royals - who famously stay above political issues and don't talk about their views.
The former lighting director, who lives in Mexico, was forced to pull out of the royal wedding with just days to go for a heart operation.
The pair have yet to meet face to face, but have talked several times over the phone.
In the week running up to the big day he changed his mind several times over if he would be attending, before finally deciding he wouldn't be able to fly to the UK - after it was revealed he worked with paparazzi to stage pictures.
In the interview he also revealed today that he made Harry promise "never to raise your hand against my daughter" before he gave the two permission to wed.
He said today: "Meghan told me first and then a few times after that Harry got on the phone with Meghan, they got on the phone together, and Harry asked for her hand on the phone."
He told hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid he "wished" he had been the one to walk Meghan into St George's Chapel, and revealed he cried as he watched Prince Charles step in on May 19.
The Duchess of Sussex's dad said Meghan cried at the news, adding: "The unfortunate thing for me now is I'm a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the dad walking her down the aisle."
But said: "I was honoured. I can't think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles.
"It might have been a treat for him as well because he didn't have a daughter."
