Comedian Eurydice Dixon’s tragic final message to friend before she was raped and murdered on way home from performing show
Eurydice Dixon's murder in a suburb in Melbourne has shocked Australia and brought the issue of violence to women to the forefront
A YOUNG comedian returning from a gig messaged a pal to say “I’m almost home safe” moments before she was raped and murdered.
Eurydice Dixon, 22, was found on a football field in a Melbourne suburb just a few steps away from her home.
Police said Miss Dixon was attacked in the suburb of Carlton North sometime after leaving a city centre bar on Tuesday at 10.30pm where she had performed a gig.
Friend Tony Magnuson, one of the last people to see her alive, told how he received a text minutes before her killer attacked.
He said: “She was happy and content.
“She gave me a hug, blew me a kiss and said she was going for a walk. She was on top of the world because her gig went so well.
“At 12am I got a message that said ‘I’m almost home safe, HBU (how about you)?"
The next day Jaymes Todd, 19, handed himself in to police and was charged with Miss Dixon’s rape and murder.
He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance in October
Friends of Miss Dixon today paid tribute, including fellow comedian Nicky Barry who knew her from working the circuit, describing her as “an absolutely amazing young woman”.
Visiting the scene where Miss Dixon was found, close pal Dylan Scolyer said: “She was my friend and she was the sweetest person in the world.
“We were meant to catch up for a coffee recently but we never did. I’d do anything to see her now.”
Activist Pia Cerveri, who has organised a vigil to remember Miss Dixon, said: “It’s appalling and not good enough that any woman could feel unsafe or even come to harm for choosing to walk home a certain way.”
The senseless, violent murder was reminiscent of the 2012 murder of Irish woman Jill Meagher which happened nearby and prompted a peace march involving tens of thousands of people.
