Boris Johnson calls for bridge to link Scotland and Northern Ireland to help keep the UK together after Brexit
The Foreign Secretary supports plans to build the £15billion bridge which would span 25 miles
BORIS Johnson is backing plans to build a £15billion bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland - to bring the UK back together after Brexit.
The Foreign Secretary believes the outlandish idea would reassure Northern Irish people that they won’t be cut off from Great Britain once we quit the EU.
The 25-mile bridge would make it much easier to travel between Britain and Northern Ireland - currently only possible by plane or ferry.
It’s not the first time Boris has supported ambitious plans for bridge-building - he previously called for a new Channel crossing after Brexit.
Yesterday he took to Twitter to share an article calling for a bridge linking the south-west of Scotland to Northern Ireland.
And a source close to him : “Boris thinks this is an interesting idea that should be looked at more seriously - as politicians in both Scotland and Northern Ireland have already said.
“It's the kind of ambitious project we need to make a success of global Britain.”
Plans for the bridge have been put forward by Liverpool University architect Alan Dunlop, who suggests it could go from the town of Portpatrick, in Dumfries and Galloway, to Larne.
The £15billion cost could be partly recouped by charging drivers to use the bridge, which would be one of the longest in the world.
The plan is backed by senior DUP politicians - MP Sammy Wilson said recently: “People used to think the Channel Tunnel was pie in the sky.
“This idea of a fixed crossing has been derided as nonsense for years, but it is entirely feasible from a technical point of view.”
Boris created waves earlier this year when he suggested building a bridge across the English Channel to send a post-Brexit message that the UK will remain closely tied to Europe.
And he was mocked for demanding his own private plane so he doesn’t have to fly on commercial flights.
Lib Dem MP Layla Moran, a supporter of the pro-EU Best for Britain campaign, said: “This is more pathetic pipe dreams from a man who has delusions of grandeur.
"First it was Boris Island, then the BoJo One jet, then a bridge between the UK and France and now a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland. This Brexit bridge plan is barmy.”
