Rather than fly the short route from Pyongyang to Singapore, via Shanghai, he flew the longer route via Beijing - cutting down on the amount of time over water.
The meeting had been due to last until Wednesday, but Kim announced he would leave hours after today's meet up, forcing Trump to do the same.
Kim plans to meet his American counterpart for up to three hours.
He and the North Korean leader will meet at the five-star on Tuesday to discuss the rogue state’s nuclear weapons programme.
The two leaders will be alone in a room for 45 minutes with only their translators, according to one US official.
They will then be joined by senior aides for 90 minutes before joining each other for a working lunch for the remainder of the time.
