DONALD Trump's lawyer has boasted that Kim Jong-un "got on his hands and knees and begged" to have his summit with the US President rescheduled.

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor, claims it was Trump's cancellation of the planned meeting on May 24 that made the North Korean leader desperate.

Giuliani told a business conference in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv: "Kim Jong-un got back on his hands and knees and begged for it, which is exactly the position you want to put him in."

Yesterday he rejected accusations that his comments might sour the atmosphere of the historic meeting due to take place in Singapore next week.

"It is pointing out that the president is the stronger figure. And you're not going to have useful negotiations unless he accepts that."

Giuliani said Trump had no choice but to call off the meeting after the North Koreans insulted Vice President Mike Pence, National Security Adviser John Bolton and threatened "nuclear annihilation" of the US.

"President Trump didn't take that. What he did was he called off the summit."

Giuliani said Kim quickly changed his position, expressed willingness to discuss denuclearisation and asked to have the meeting again.

"That's what I mean by begging for it."

Giuliani, Trump's lawyer in the Russian investigation, noted that he was sharing a personal opinion and was not part of the US foreign policy team.

Trump cancelled the planned meeting on May 24 blaming "tremendous anger and open hostility" in the North Korean leader's statement.

But on May 1, after a White House visit from a high-ranking North Korean official, Trump declared the meeting would go ahead.

Giuliani, a strong supporter of Israel, had earlier suggested high-pressure tactics should be used with the Palestinian Authority, which has cut off ties with the US to protest Trump's decision to recognise contested Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
