London Mayor Sadiq Khan ‘would rather share selfies than face up to crime crisis’ as he tweets about electric cars and new museums
Top Tories blasted the Mayor for sharing fluffy pictures online while crime rates spiral
SADIQ Khan has been blasted for posting more on social media about "sexy" issues that get him good coverage than about London's spiralling crime problems.
Top Tories lashed out at the London Mayor for being "great at PR" but failing to address the issues that really matter to voters.
And members of the public also suggested Mr Khan should put more of his efforts into tackling the recent rise in knife crimes, sex attacks and moped muggings.
Today the Mayor has tweeted about the new £1billion culture centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, rough sleeping, celebrating votes for women and air pollution.
But his only mention of the crime crisis was a video about his new Young Londoners Fund, which wants to help young people who are "at risk of getting caught up in crime".
In recent days he has also written about fashionable causes such as electric cars and childhood obesity.
Tonight Mr Khan finally broke his silence with a Twitter video, saying: "I accept there's been a serious concern about the increase in serious violent crime.
"I accept there are too many victims of crime today who shouldn't be victims of crime, but I'll carry on lobbying for more resources from Government and carry on supporting our police."
Praising the efforts of police to hold back the crime wave, he added: "They're working incredibly hard, they need support from Government. They've got my support - we need support from the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary."
And he claimed Londoners had to take "responsibility" by being "the eyes and ears of the police".
James Cleverly, the Tories' deputy chairman, told The Sun: "Sadiq Khan is great at PR but abysmal at delivery - and blames everyone else.
"This is not a simple problem to fix, it will take time, it will take focus, and there isn’t an easy palatable quick headline he can get out of it.
"That's why he seems to struggle to focus on it. If he can't get a quick adrenaline fix of media admiration he seems unable to focus."
"It won't happen overnight. Transport, crime, house building, tree planting - get on with the sometimes less exciting, less sexy bit of the job.
"The ribbon cutting and smiling selfies are the easy bit. The difficult bit is the stuff he’s failed on."
Users on Facebook were quick to hit out at Mr Khan's choice of social media subjects too.
Terry Horne said in response to a post about train services: "Trains damaging London's reputation? Knife crime isn't? Get real."

Mr Khan has blamed the rise in crime on cuts to police numbers and called on the Government to boost funding.
A spokesman said: "Responsibility for the rise in violent crime across the whole UK lies with the current Government who have slashed the Met’s budget by £1billion - which means thousands fewer police officers on our streets.
"The new Home Secretary must urgently give the police the funding they desperately need to do their job.”
