He has had to cancel a scholarship to a US university and may never play sport again.

He was driving with two pals when four men in a Nissan Micra rammed him off the road.

As he got out, the thugs drove into him. One beat him with a golf club, and another hit pal Josh Jones with a crowbar before the gang fled.

Police are still probing the motive behind Saturday’s attack in Rochdale.

Aaron Jones of Littleborough RUFC said: “It has shocked everyone. Matthew and Josh aren’t troublemakers.”
