What are Iftar and Suhur?

Muslims eat two larger meals when the sun is down in Ramadan, which this year will begin at sunset on Sunday, May 5, 2019.

These are called Iftar and Suhur.

The Suhur, which is consumed in the early hours of the morning, often combines breads, potatoes, eggs and rice as well as some dairy products.

The Iftar is a blessing, often enjoyed as a community.

Fruits and vegetables are usually big parts of the Iftar, as are many delicacies unique to the Islam religion.

When are the meals eaten during the holy month?

The Suhur is consumed as early as 2.30am.

The timetable created by the London mosque states it should end by 3.19am on the first day of the holy month.

It will slowly be enjoyed earlier and earlier, in line with the changing daylight hours.

And the Iftar is eaten as late as 9.40pm in the latter part of the month.

The timetable suggests Muslims should have the meal at 8.50pm on the first night but this gets later as the days get longer.
