Husband’s heartbreak after his wife, 29, dies three days after their ‘perfect’ wedding
A GRIEVING husband has paid a heart-breaking tribute to his wife after she died three days after their wedding.
Chelmsford primary school teacher Katie Sutterby, 29, died just five weeks after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.
Husband Will paid a heart-felt tribute to his wife of just three days.
He told : “She was amazing, so dedicated. All the kids’ parents came to her funeral even parents of children she taught the term before.
“She was just really exuberant and so beautiful. I’m so proud I got to call her my wife.”
It comes as The Sun launched the No Time 2 Lose campaign, to raise awareness of bowel cancer so fewer people die from the second deadliest form of the disease.
When the disease is caught early – at stage 1 – people have a 97 per cent chance of living five years or longer.
Catch the disease at stage 4 – when it’s already spread – and that chance plummets to just seven per cent.
That’s why early diagnosis is vital, and why the No Time 2 Lose campaign is urging everyone to learn the five red-flag signs of the disease.
And we are calling for the screening age for bowel cancer to start at 50 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland not 60 – bringing it in line with Scotland. A move which could save more than 4,500 lives every year.
Katie began to get indigestion-like symptoms but doctors initially thought it was down to gallstones.
Then one day she suddenly felt a lot of pain and went to A&E.
After a night of tests, scans and x-rays the couple were told that she had bowel cancer that had already spread to her liver.
She was told she probably only had months to live, at best a year.
Will said: “I was planning to propose to Katie later in the year but we had no time so we decided to just do it and get married.”
The wedding was organised in just two weeks and the pair tied the knot on August 10.
He said: “It was amazing to do it in the time we had. She looked beautiful.
NO TIME 2 LOSE: WE'RE FIGHTING FOR FAIR SCREENING FOR ALL BRITS
Our No Time 2 Lose campaign is calling for
- the Government to lower the screening age from 60 to 50 – as it is in Scotland
- every Brit to know the five red-flag signs of bowel cancer
And we want you to dig deep and help raise money for Bowel Cancer UK and Beating Bowel Cancer – who work tirelessly to beat this disease. Donate .
“I didn’t think she was going to have the energy to keep going for as long as she did, but we danced all night and she chatted to everyone.
“It was a perfect day and she had a great time with all her family and friends.”
Now the Maltese Road Primary School has paid its own tribute to the popular teacher but building a garden in her honour.
The garden was unveiled at the end of April to the whole school and more than 60 parents, with the school choir singing to the crowd.
