Mr Blunkett said: “It’s time for Labour MPs to pick up the cudgel and formulate ideas and policies.”

It came as Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell admitted Labour had to reach out to forgotten communities who had largely voted Brexit. And he said the anti-Semitism row had cost Labour victory in the London borough of Barnet, a key Labour target in last week’s council elections.

The self-styled Marxist will meet Barnet councillors on Tuesday for peace talks.
