Government launches new online service for splitting couples that cuts costs and red tape

The service, dubbed iDivorceU, follows a pilot that Gary Lineker and second wife Danielle Bux used to divorce for just £400

COUPLES will soon be able to apply for divorce at the click of a mouse.

A new online service will remove the need to fill in forms or go to court.

Estranged partners can complete the process at home.

The system offers prompts and guidance and uses clear, non-technical language.

Four in ten applications are rejected at the first stage as the forms are filled in wrongly or documents are missing.

Court staff waste 13,000 hours a year dealing with complex paperwork so the system is expected to save taxpayers’ cash.

Justice Minister Lucy Frazer said it will make the task easier when people are going through a difficult and painful time.

She added: “This will cut waste, speed up services and is better fit for modern life.”

The service, dubbed iDivorceU by officials, follows a pilot that Match of The Day host Gary Lineker and second wife Danielle Bux used to divorce for £400. In all, the pilot saw 1,000 petitions issued online with 91 per cent satisfied with the service.

The full scheme launches in England and Wales this month.

It is part of a £1billion programme to modernise the courts.

Other changes include a digital system to claim money owed and resolve disputes out of court.

Tax appeals are also available online, drastically reducing the number of applications returned as incomplete or inaccurate.
