Prince Louis gets first honour – as Blackpool Zoo names its new camel calf after the new royal baby

PRINCE Louis has been given his first honour - with a baby camel named after the newly arrived royal tot.

The tiny, double humped Bactrian camel calf shares the same birthday with the third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the odd pair now share a name.

Camel mum Tibet gave birth to the furry baby at Blackpool Zoo on Monday after a 15-month gestation.

It was the same day as Kate Middleton was whisked to the Lindo wing to deliver the new baby prince.

Johnpaul Houston, Assistant Head Keeper at Blackpool Zoo, said: "We were all delighted to welcome our first camel calf of the year and he was spotted by keepers just as news broke that the Duchess of Cambridge had gone into labour.

"We are hoping for some more calves to join Louis as the season gets into full swing and any additional arrivals will share the same father, who is called Sid."

It was today announced that the third child of Wills and Kate would be named Louis Arthur Charles.

And while all eyes are on Prince Louis the baby, his camel counterpart is also a rare breed.

The camel is a domestic Bactrian camel, whose wild Mongolian cousins are critically endangered.

There are less than 600 remaining in their native Gobi and the Taklimakan deserts of Mongolia and Xinjiang.

Blackpool Zoo has been extremely successful in breeding the species, with Louis the camel to to join Sid, Olivia, Tibet, Karamay, Alice, Elsa and Georgie.

The couple managed to catch everyone by surprise, with Arthur and James previously firm favourites.

The moniker was previously at just 20/1 odds of being chosen.

The Blackpool Zoo is home to more than  1,500 mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates.
