AFTER days of speculation the new royal baby has been named Prince Louis Arthur Charles.

The name was revealed by Kensington Palace this morning, four days after William and Kate welcomed their third child.

But the announcement immediately triggered debate over how the young prince's name is pronounced - 'Loo-ee or Loo-is?'

The answer is in fact 'Loo-ee' and appears to have been chosen in a nod to the Royal Family's past.

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall appear to have named the baby after Louis Mountbatten, the much-loved uncle of Prince Philip, who was killed by an IRA bomb in 1979.

William and Kate have surprised punters in their choice of name, with Louis a 18/1 outsider earlier this week.

By also giving Louis his father's name, William has continued the tradition of handing down royal names through the generations.

The newborn shares the name Louis with his brother George, who has it as one of his middle names. Louis is also one of William's middle names.

The newborn's full title is His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - but he's likely to be known by his rather shorter new name.

Albert was the bookies' favourite, with odds of 2/1 at Paddy Power, 7/4 at Coral and 6/4 at William Hill.

The tot was born weighing a healthy 8lbs 7oz at St Mary's Hospital's Lindo Wing in London on Monday.

Prince George was the first of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall's brood, born on July 22, 2013.

And two years later, Princess Charlotte was born at the same hospital on May 2, 2015.
