The move is likely to trigger a vicious battle for her safe Lewisham seat between Labour factions.

The MP has been campaigning to keep Britain in the single market alongside fellow Labour MP Alison McGovern.

She was previously full time deputy mayor for Lewisham in charge of regeneration schemes.

Ms Alexander did not respond to calls last night. A City Hall spokesman said: “No comment.”
