Will Prince Charles be King?

On September 8, 2022, Buckingham Palace confirmed Her Majesty Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history, has passed away.

King Charles, described as the "heir apparent" to the Crown, is the eldest son of the deceased monarch.

Charles is the oldest and longest-serving heir to the throne, as well as the longest-serving Prince of Wales.

Buckingham Palace announced in a statement: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

"The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

The UK was immediately plunged into a state of mourning, with plans for her funeral and a national day of remembrance to be announced in the coming days.

Her passing comes after Prince Charles and Prince William raced to be by the Queen’s side after doctors confirmed they were “concerned” for her health.

Prior to her death, the monarch was said by Buckingham Palace to be “comfortable” at Balmoral, where she remained under medical supervision.

Will Charles be called King?

Speculation was rife in 2005 that The Prince of Wales would give up the name Charles when he ascended the throne due to unfortunate associations with that name.

Charles I was the only King in English history to be tried and executed for treason following the Civil War.

His son, Charles II, was known for his extensive extra-marital affairs and also ruled over a time of plague and the Great Fire of London.

According to , the King, who was christened Charles Philip Arthur George, held private talks with “trusted friends” about the possibility of using his third middle name and reigning as George VII.

This would follow his grandfather George VI who was known as Albert, Duke of York, until he succeeded his brother following the abdication.

Will Camilla be Queen?

Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles wed in a civil ceremony in Windsor Castle on April 9, 2005.

The wedding required royal approval from Her Majesty, who did not herself attend the service.

After the wedding, Camilla was named Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, rather than Princess of Wales.

Since both Charles and Camilla were divorcees, there has been speculation over how she will be known after Charles takes the throne.

She is now The Queen Consort.
