But what is Armageddon, where will the final battle be fought and who will take part in it? Here's everything we know about the predicted apocalypse.
What is Armageddon?
Armageddon is often used as a catch-all phrase for the end of the world - or a reference to the 1998 Bruce Willis movie.
But the term originated in the New Testament's Book of Revelation, referring to the prophesied place for a gathering of armies.
Once gathered, the armies are meant to engage in a battle during the "end times".
The biblical prophecy is interpreted as symbolic of the progression of the world toward the "great day of God, the Almighty".
In this rendering, the great looming mountain of God's just and holy wrath is poured out against unrepentant sinners, led by Satan, in a literal end-of-the-world final confrontation.
Where and when will the final battle be fought?
The word Armageddon only appears once in the Greek New Testament, in Revelation 16:16.
The transliterated word means: "mountain or range of hill", but some experts argue that the world is derived from the Hebrew "moed", meaning "assembly".
Following the interpretation of those scholars, Armageddon would mean "Mountain of Assembly", which Jordan says is "a reference to the assembly at Mount Sinai, and to its replacement, Mount Zion."
But others argue that rather than being restricted to one area, the battle of Armageddon will encompass the whole earth.
Despite its one-off nature, the predictions for when Armageddon will hit vary.
Conspiracy theorists are now claiming that the world will end on April 23.
They claim that the sun, moon and Jupiter will align on this date in the constellation of Virgo, sparking the Biblical Rapture.
And if that wasn't enough, the rumoured death plant Nibiru is also predicted to appear in the sky sparking a spread of madness, World War III and the rise of the Antichrist.

Who will fight in it?
According to the New Testament, the battle will be waged between Jesus and God's enemies.
The Book of Revelation describes how Jesus will lead a heavenly army to victory.
Enemies are defined as those who oppose God's authority and those who treat God with contempt, says the Book of Ezekiel.
