Fury as Royal Mail snubs Brexit for extinct and endangered species stamps

Tory MP Nigel Evans blasted Royal Mail's latest unveiling saying: 'They really are playing politics'

ROYAL Mail chiefs were slammed last night after announcing a fresh set of stamps highlighting extinct and endangered species - and still snubbing Brexit.

The Eurasian beaver and pool frog will be showcased on a series of stamps released next month.

The Royal Mail have repeatedly said Britain leaving the EU isn’t an event important enough to recognise.

But they will put on sale the successful reintroductions of the sand lizard, large blue butterfly, osprey and stinking hawk’s-beard plant, illustrated by Wiltshire-based artist Tanya Achilleos Lock, next week.

The Sun is campaigning for a special set of commemorative Brexit stamps to mark Brexit Day on March 29 2019.

Last night Tory MP Nigel Evans blasted: “I think it’s time the public had a say on what is on our stamps.

“Leaving the EU is the biggest constitutional event to happen to the UK since 1973 when we joined and that was the time to put beavers and frogs on our stamp.

“The Royal Mail issued a stamp for joining the EU.”

And he added: “I’ve never heard of either of these creatures but I’m sure they are delightful.

“They really are playing politics by refusing to mark this momentous occasion.”

Royal Mail spokesman Philip Parker said: “When a plant or animal become extinct in a country, that does not have to be the end of the story.

“Our beautiful new stamps mark the skill and expertise of conservationists in reintroducing species back to their former environments.”

The six stamps will go on sale at post offices from April 17

A Royal Mail spokesman said today: “For many years, it has been our policy not to get involved in political matters.

"Royal Mail maintains strict political neutrality due to the important role we play in the electoral process delivering postal votes and election literature, including during referendums.

"We have never issued stamps on the outcome of a referendum, including – for example – the outcome of the Scottish independence referendum.”
