Harry and Meghan haven’t invited Theresa May or Donald Trump to wedding but Canadian PM Justin Trudeau will go
PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle have barred politicians from their wedding — meaning even PM Theresa May will not be there.
Only close pals of Harry, 32, and his 36-year-old bride have made the guest list for the ceremony at Windsor Castle next month.
Harry had planned to invite former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, who have become good friends.
But as The Sun revealed in December, the UK government urged him not to ask them in case it upset America’s current leader Donald Trump.
Senior Foreign Office and No10 officials were worried inviting the Obamas but not President Trump would be seen as a national snub and make it impossible for Mrs May to engage with the White House.
A Kensington Palace source said: “President and Mrs Obama are not coming to the wedding, but the couples look forward to seeing each other soon.
“This will be every inch a royal wedding, but those invited all have existing relationships with one or both of the couple.”
The Palace was at pains to point out that, since Harry is only fifth in line to the throne, he was not obliged to invite any politicians or Heads of State.
They also said the wedding venue — St George’s Chapel in the Windsor Castle grounds — is significantly smaller than Westminster Abbey, where Harry’s brother Prince William wed Kate Middleton in 2011 in the presence of numerous heads of government.
Many foreign royals have also been left off the guest list. In contrast, second-born Prince Andrew had a host of royals and Commonwealth heads at his wedding to Sarah Ferguson in 1986.
Then-PM Margaret Thatcher was also there, as was Nancy Reagan, wife of former US president Ronald.
Harry and Meghan’s guest list was drawn up by Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace rather than the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, which presides over national events such as state funerals.
If any politician is invited, it will be down to their personal relationship with Meghan or Harry, not because of their position.
It is thought Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau are on the list as personal friends of Meghan, but Kensington Palace refused to comment.
An official Palace spokesman said: “It has been decided that an official list of political leaders is not required for the wedding.
“Her Majesty’s Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by The Royal Household.”
