AN ANCESTRY expert has claimed the Queen is distantly related to the Prophet Mohammed - after going back 43 generations on her family tree.

Burke's Peerage, a British authority on royal geneology, originally shared the findings in 1986, but it has recently resurfaced after being published in a Moroccan newspaper.

The Al-Ousboue claims that the reigning monarch's bloodline runs through the Earl of Cambridge in the 14th century and across medieval Spain to the Prophet's daughter Fatima.

Ali Gomaa, the former grand mufti of Egypt, previously verified the genealogical record which apparently link the two - although it's long been disputed by historians.

A 2008 study by Burke's Peerage claimed Queen Elizabeth II is a descendant of a Muslim princess called Zaida, who fled her home town of Seville in the 11th century.

Zaida, who converted to Christianity, married King Al-Mu'tamid ibn Abbad of Seville and their son Sancho's descendant later married the Earl of Cambridge in the 11th century.

However some historians believe she was the daughter of a wine-drinking caliph who descended from the Prophet and others say she married into his family, according to the Spectator.

Reaction to the monarch's apparent links to the Prophet has been varied, with some welcoming the news.

Abdelhamid Al-Aouni, who wrote the article in Al-Ousboue, said: “It builds a bridge between our two religions and kingdoms."

Other reports have used titles reserved for the Prophet’s descendants to describe the queen.

But others have rubbished the claims, including one Reddit user who wrote: "This is just propaganda used by the British monarchy to appease the growing number of Muslim subjects."

Buckingham Palace has been contacted for comment.
