A British woman is fighting for her life after being swept away by an avalanche she caused.
The 33-year-old, who has not been named, was with her partner who survived the avalanche and raised the alarm.
A helicopter was scrambled to the scene and airlifted the woman to a nearby hospital where she was said to be suffering from ''multiple injuries''.
The drama happened at the Italian resort of Pila near Aosta, at around 2,500m close to the Couis 1 ski lift.
Officials said the woman was ''lucky to be alive'' after being swept down more than 100ft in a wall of snow and hitting several rocks.
They were also investigating the possibility the woman herself had caused the avalanche which, under Italian law, is a crime punishable with a maximum 12 year jail term.
A police source said: ''Early indications are the skier herself caused the avalanche by going off piste with her partner.
''She is very lucky to be alive but she has serious injuries.
''We are looking to see if we can recover footage from various cameras and are also speaking to the man she was with.''
The woman was in the Parini Hospital in Aosta where officials said she was ''serious but stable with severe injuries.''
