CHARITY CANCER CUT PLEA

Charities back ex-Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s calls for Government to boost bowel cancer checks

CHARITIES have backed ex-Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s calls for the Government to boost bowel cancer checks.

Lord Lansley, 61, made the demand after revealing he is being treated for a tumour — and said it could have been spotted earlier if key screening tests had not been hit by NHS cuts.

“Bowel scope” checks were introduced in 2010 when he was a Tory minister and should have been nationwide by 2016.

But Lord Lansley said NHS cuts “wrongly” imposed by the Treasury means only half the country now gets them.

Bowel Cancer UK and Beating Bowel Cancer said: “Ideally we would like to see bowel scope screening rolled out fully across England.”
