The 49 people murdered on the streets of London so far in 2018

THE killings of Tanesha Melbourne and 16-year-old Amaan Shakoor puts London’s murder toll for 2018 at 49.

The Met said they were “concerned” and issued a Section 60 order which allows them to stop and search members of the public without suspicion in an effort to get to grips with the violence epidemic.

There were 15 murders in February and a record 22 in March. The previous peak for the capital was 19 in June 2017.

By contrast there were 14 murders in New York in February and 21 in March.

London’s deputy mayor for policing Sophie Linden blamed Government cuts. She said: “Police numbers are falling and youth services are cut because of Government cuts.

“Social media certainly has a part to play in whipping up the violence on the streets.”
