The South Australian Police Water Operations Unit had been carrying out checks on boat users in a two-man dinghy when their officers spotted the creature.

The pair of policeman managed to stay calm, despite the fact the shark was silently stalking them across the water.

Footage captured them looking behind them as they sailed on, keeping an eye on the deadly animal's position.

The officers had been carrying out alcohol and drug tests on boat operators when they saw the great white.

Afterwards, the force joked that they should have breathalysed the animal, dubbed Noah.

Uploading the video to Facebook, they wrote: "Police launch Investigator 2 had a close encounter with a Great White shark today while patrolling at Tapley Shoal, about 9 nautical miles east of Edithburgh.

"Police were concentrating on recreational boats and checking registration, licences and safety equipment along with alcohol and drug testing operators when they were paid a visit by one of the locals.

"Thirty boats were checked and pleasingly, no operators tested positive to drugs or alcohol and only a few minor breaches for safety equipment were found.

"Noah wasn't keen on being breath tested and our Water Operations Unit officers were happy to oblige!"
