Confusion as Sainsbury’s tells customers its Easter eggs are ‘halal certified’ – then apologises for ‘mistake’
A customer care agent made the mistake on Twitter telling one follower every Easter or hens' egg the supermarket sells is "halal certified"
SAINSBURY'S customers were left baffled by a tweet from the supermarket claiming both their Easter eggs and hens' eggs were "halal certified".
A customer care agent made the blunder in a Twitter thread earlier this week under a link to the supermarket's 'Easter Eggs' section on their website.
The exchange took place after a customer asked if the supermarket sold "non-halal" eggs.
The agent responded to the query saying: "Every Easter or hens' egg we sell is halal certified so technically every single one of our eggs that we sell is halal."
But the revelation of "halal certified eggs" came as a surprise to user Humzah Abid who responded: "Didn't even know there was such thing as non-halal eggs."
Later, another customer service agent apologised for her colleague's blunder saying: "My colleague gave out the incorrect information. None of our own brand chocolate eggs are halal certified."
"Really sorry for any confusion caused," she added.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury's also told The Sun: "Our chocolate eggs are not halal certified. Neither are our fresh eggs."
Sainsbury's also came under fire as some customers reported seeing a lack of "Easter" labelling on chocolate eggs and subsequently took to Twitter and Facebook to blast the supermarket.
One shocked man vowed on Sainsbury's Facebook page to never shop there again following their "total disregard" for the Easter holiday.

But other customers defended the supermarket, saying there were plenty of Easter eggs and products in their local store.
Sainsbury's has previously told customers: "We feel labeling such products as Chocolate eggs best describes the product, its ingredients and contents.
"We do have other products that state the word "Easter"," they added.
