Harrowing last moments of woman entering smoke-filled flat before being carried out dead by firefighters caught on CCTV
In the clip, it takes just seconds for the elderly woman to succumb to smoke inhalation
HARROWING footage shows an elderly woman's tragic final moments as she steps inside her smoke-filled flat before being overcome by fumes within mere SECONDS.
CCTV shows the woman, aged in her 70s, opening the door of her ground floor flat to be met by thick smoke billowing into the communal hallway.
In the clip, the woman, who has not been identified at the request of her family, approaches her front door before being met with billowing smoke from the flat.
As the hallway fills with smoke, she then steps inside and, according to Staffordshire Fire and Rsecue Service, it took just seconds for her to succumb to the fumes.
Firefighters then appear in the short clip, battling through the smoke to carry the woman's lifeless body outside.
Despite desperate attempts to resuscitate the woman, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service released the 30-second clip to warn about the lethal dangers of entering burning homes as part of the Get Out Stay Out campaign.
Director of Prevent and Protect at the service, Glynn Luznyj, said a person can be overcome by fumes after taking just two to three breaths of smoke.
He said: "We're very thankful that the family have agreed to release this disturbing footage showing their loved one's last living moments.
"We hope that this will make people think twice before they investigate a fire or go back inside for any belongings as we don't want this happening to anyone else."
He continued: "That is the aim of our Get Out Stay Out campaign as while the majority of people do the right thing by getting out and staying out.
"We do unfortunately see some people re-entering burning buildings and they have suffered serious injuries or death as a result.
"It is really important to call us straight away and stay outside during a fire."
Get Out, Stay Out and Call 999
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue have warned the public that in the event of a fire, do not tackle the fire yourself, leave it to the fire crews.
As part of the Get Out, Stay Out campaign, the fire service has said working smoke alarms and a planned escape route could save your life and your home.
Always install working 10 year sealed battery smoke alarms on every floor of your home, and test the alarms every week.
Preparing an escape plan with everyone who lives in your home, including children, older or disabled people and lodgers will help you to act quickly.
According to Staffs Fire Service here are some tips to help plan your escape from fire:
The best escape route is the normal way in and out of your home
Think of any difficulties you may have getting out, eg at night you may need to have a torch to light your way
Choose a second escape route, in case the first one is blocked
Keep all exits clear of obstructions, like bicycles
If there are children, older or disabled people or pets, plan how you will get them out
Never go back in for your possessions. Your life is more important than material things. Get Out, Stay Out, Call 999
