A YOUNG woman is fighting for life after being crushed by a pallet of bricks which reportedly fell five storeys from a crane today.

Horrified witnesses described hearing a "loud bang" and seeing a woman unconscious on the pavement.

Two people were taken to hospital following the terrifying incident in a busy street in Mile End, East London at 9.40am.

Passers-by rushed to help the pedestrian collapsed near the crane working on £650,000 luxury apartments.

Shocking pictures and video show debris scattered across the pavement.

London Ambulance Service confirmed two people were taken to hospital.

One woman is fighting for life but the condition of the second patient is not known.

Witness Alan Harris heard a "loud bang" before rushing over to try to help.

He told the "One woman was out cold underneath the bricks and another woman next to her was screaming hysterically for an ambulance and looking up into the heavens."

The Go Kart track owner said it was unclear whether the two women were together.

Aladdin Rahman said: “My friend, who’s a bus driver and was driving a bus at the time it happened, said that some bricks had fallen on the woman.

“Several people were trying to get to the lady and so were the construction workers.

“It was a hectic scene at the time.”

The incident happened next to a housing development in Burdett Road at the junction with St Paul's Way.

Police have confirmed that her next of kin have been informed.

Bus routes are being diverted away from the scene and Burdett Road has also been closed between St Paul Way’s Way and Agnes Street.

Bow Corner is a new development of 19 one, two and three bedroom apartments and is currently under construction.

Steve Boreham, construction director of Higgins Homes, said in a statement: “Our primary thoughts and concerns are with the lady who has been injured and those affected today.

"We are working with the Health & Safety Executive who are investigating the incident to determine the cause and will release more information as soon as it’s available.

"Our priority at the moment is of course to make the area safe.”

A HSE spokesperson said: “Inspectors have attended the site and are making ongoing enquiries in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police to investigate the circumstances of the incident. As the investigation is ongoing we are unable to comment further at this time.”
