It started from the age of two when he got a toy Henry.

By ten, he was teaching himself repairs and will often mend them for friends’ parents.

Matthew, who keeps them in a workshop in the garden, said: “I get them off eBay or find them in skips and people have even started leaving them outside my back door. I can get a broken machine for about £5, fix it and sell it on for £50.”

His parents, teaching assistant Christine, 50, and engineer Richard, 52, of Maghull, Merseyside, told of their pride.

But Christine added: “He’s more interested in how the hoovers work than doing any cleaning, though.”
