Tragic Amelia Wood, 11, who was killed by flying Land Rover wheel on walk to school had previously beaten leukaemia
The schoolgirl had had raised money with her family for The Children's Hospital Charity and Sheffield Children's Unit where she had undergone cancer treatment as a young child
THE tragic schoolgirl who died after she was hit by wheel that came loose from a Land Rover had beaten leukaemia, it has emerged.
Amelia Wood, 11, had been walking along a pavement towards a bus stop on her way to school when the front wheel of the passing 4x4 broke off and hit her around 8am on Tuesday in Manby, near Louth, Lincs.
During the most intense part of her treatment Amelia would visit the care unit four times a week.
Her mum Hayley told the Grimsby Telegraph in 2012 how brave the little girl had been taking up to ten doses of medication each day for two years.
She had been diagnosed in 2009 and in February 2012 she had her last treatment.
Alongside her daughter’s treatment, Hayley began fundraising for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, organising various events, raising a total of £12,500 which was split between the hospital in Sheffield and the When You Wish Upon A Star appeal and other charities.
Amelia also featured in a wedding fair at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, where she was centre stage as she modelled one of Wedding Belles And Posh Frocks’ dresses on the catwalk.
She had also sold wristbands in aid of the hospital charity.
Paying tribute to Amelia, Martin Brown, Executive Principal of Louth Academy said: "Amelia was a well-loved student who will be greatly missed by staff and students at the Academy.
"We are all devastated by such tragic news.
"She was a very popular and caring student who always helped and supported her friends."
Eyewitnesses who saw the tragedy unfold described the incident as "like something out of Final Destination”.
The driver of the Land Rover Discovery was said to have been "devastated" and had only bought the vehicle a month earlier.
