Body language expert says Meg’s public hugs make her stand out from royals – and Harry’s ‘in awe’ of her
Body language expert Judi James says the actress's hugs set her apart from the royal family and Prince Harry is in 'awe' of his bride-to-be's ease with the public.
A BODY language expert has said actress Meghan Markle's hugs with members of the public makes her stand out from the royals - and Prince Harry is in 'awe' of his bride-to-be's ease.
The actress's embraces with children from the crowd shows her 'genuine affection' for fans and well-wishers, as well as her intention to connect with the public, 'building a strong rapport,' expert Judi James says.
In hugging this starstruck schoolgirl, Judi says: "Meghan throws herself into the hug in a way that suggests genuine affection for the waiting fans.
"Harry is the only other good hugger in the royal family but his hand tucked inside his jacket and over his heart suggests even he's in awe of his fiancé's technique.
"This little girl is on the receiving end of a charisma double-up here, getting double eye-contact attention from both Meghan and Harry.
"Meghan holds her shoulders to encourage her to chat and this intensely attentive eye-listening from the royal couple will achieve the ideal result from any powerful forms of charisma: it will make her feel important and special."
By embracing one child in a 'very intense, spontaneous' hug with her arms right them and dipping her head makes Meghan 'stand alone' from the royals.
Judi says: "Here she has her arms right around the child and has even dipped her head to add to the embrace.
"It's interesting how the child has responded by wrapping its arms right around Meghan in a clinging gesture that suggests strong affection.
"This ability to show open affection to the public and have it returned will make Meghan quite stand-alone in the royal line-up and could be a mini royal revolution in the making."
The gestures between Harry and Meghan on this visit show two key aspects of their relationship.
"Firstly, they clearly can't keep their hands off one another and - like any soon-to-be-marrieds - they have high levels of physical and emotional attachment.
"But secondly are suggestions of a very balanced and even-handed aspect to their relationship, which is nearly unique in royal circles. Their touch gesture is mirrored here, showing neither Harry nor Meghan is taking a dominant or leading role.
"With the hand splayed and palm flattened in the extended hug this is a support and steering gesture as well as an affectionate one. With them both using it in an identical way as a tie-sign the signal is that they see themselves as equally supportive."
Judi also says that the couple communicate 'silently and powerfully' when they are working as a team.
"As Harry bends to talk to the crowd Meghan touches his back in a loving reassurance gesture.
"Harry's response is quietly romantic: although focusing on the conversation with the fans he reaches his left hand out backwards palm-up in a bid to hold Meghan's hand."
And in speaking to the gathered children, Meghan shows 'crowd-pleasing' skills by crouching right down and allowing them to speak to her as an equal.
"It's a mirroring gesture that shows empathy and that creates instant rapport by using undivided eye-attention."
And despite their differences in height, Harry and Meghan 'mirror' each other on royal walkabouts.
Judi says: "Here they use twinned smiles and mutual arm-hugs to show like-minded thinking and a very tactile sense of rapport."
