Central Michigan University, northwest of Detroit, was placed on lockdown after shots were fired inside a dormitory.
Lt. Larry Klaus with CMU Police told a press conference Davis was taken to hospital on Thursday "due to what the officers believed may be a drug-related type incident, an overdose or a bad reaction to drugs."
He also said authorities are describing the shooting, which happened at around 8am (1pm GMT) as a "family-type domestic issue".
Cops released a description of the suspect after he fled the scene.
Officials later tracked him down where he was arrested and taken into police custody, however no further details have been made public at this stage.
Special agents from the Detroit Field Division of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Unit are en route to the university to assist officers in the search for the suspect.
According to local media, armed police have now extended the search for the suspect to off campus apartments.
Today is the final day of classes before Spring Break and the university has advised parents who are travelling to pick up students to not come to the campus until further notice.
As the incident has unfolded and police search for the suspect, panicked students have taken to Snapchat to share images of the scene.
Earlier, CMU wrote on Twitter that there were reports of shots fired at Campbell Hall and that the suspect was still at large.
Officials described the suspect as “black” and said he’s considered armed and dangerous.
Michigan State Police confirmed two people have been shot, according to WILX 10.
A university police official confirmed the department was monitoring the situation but declined to provide details.
Police have urged students and residents to take shelter as they patrol parking lots with a helicopter overhead searching for the shooter.
The Governor of Michigan Rick Snyder has said: "I am in constant contact with Michigan State Police as they work with local law enforcement to determine what has occurred at Central Michigan University.
"The priority right now is the safety of those still on campus and I thank all first responders involved for their swift action."
