Toyota delivers Brexit boost for Theresa May after pledging to build their new Auris motor in Britain
Johan van Zylmade, Toyota Europe president, made the decision to build the motor here but warned the PM that friction-less trade with the EU is vital
TOYOTA yesterday committed to building the new version of its Auris motor in Brexit Britain in a bumper boost for Theresa May.
The car will be produced at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire – with engines sourced largely from its Deeside factory in North Wales.
Johan van Zyl, Toyota Europe president, said the move reflected the company’s desire to “do what we can to secure the competitiveness of our UK operations.”
But he warned Theresa May that securing friction-less trade with the EU was vital for the company’s “future success.”
Production on the new Auris will begin in 2019 – and guarantee around six to seven years work at the plant.
Nissan and Honda have previously made commitments to the UK yet experts insist a deal on a customs union is critical to ensuring more cars are made in Britain beyond the next decade.

Toyota invested £240 million in the Burnaston plant last year with £20 million from the Government.
In a statement today, Business Secretary Greg Clark said it was a thumping vote of confidence in the UK.
He said: “It is testament to the highly-skilled and committed workforce that helps make the UK’s automotive sector one of the most productive in the world.
“And this Government will continue to work to create the best possible environment to maintain this fruitful relationship.”
