Are trains being delayed by the snow?

Yes, trains have been cancelled today.

Trains cannot run safely unless a snowplough has cleared the way.

Heavy snow can also cause branches to break off trees which can damage overhead wires and block the track.

A Network Rail spokesman said this week: “We will have extra staff working around the clock in order to keep main lines as clear as possible but while we will do everything we can to keep people moving, some lines may be closed and services will be subject to delays and cancellations, especially in the areas worst hit."

Greater Anglia

Trains across the whole Greater Anglia and Stansted Express network are subject to cancellations and delays tonight (Friday, March 2).

As more snow is forecast, passengers can expect disruption until the close of service today.

Greater Anglia is warning of major disruption on the Baintree, Cambridge, Clacton-on-Sea and Hertford Lines.

Ticket restrictions have been lifted until the end of Sunday so that customers can travel on an alternative, earlier or later service than originally booked.

Greater Anglia expects that service delays, cancellations and alterations will continue into the weekend.

Can I claim compensation when my train is delayed by snow?

You can claim compensation under a train operators' Delay Repay scheme if your journey is delayed by more than 30 minutes - 15 minutes with some operators - for any reason other than planned engineering work.

Most train companies have adopted a national scheme used to compensate you for unexpected delays even if you are a weekly, monthly or season ticket holder - and sometimes this includes bad weather.

You will need to apply for compensation from the specific rail company directly and how much you are entitled to varies with different companies.

You can find out details from different rail companies .
