It added the 31-year-old faces up to 15 years in jail in France for attempted homicide and grievous bodily harm.

The suspect was apprehended following a year-and-a-half-long investigation between German and British police.

The man, who was arrested during a flight change in Munich, was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by France last year.

German police identified his victim as a 51-year-old England fan who suffered fractured bones and serious injuries to his brain and lungs.

Andrew Bache, from Portsmouth, was 51 when he was "ambushed by Russian hooligans" during the tournament in France.

He fell into a coma - from which he has only recently emerged - after a group of Russians battered him with iron bars, inflicting serious brain and lung injuries.

Bache, known as Pepe to friends, was left fighting for his life when clashes broke out between fans during the Three Lions' opening game in Marseille.

He has no recollection of the attack which has forced him to live in a self-contained flat where he is re-learning how to do household chores.

Andrew, who was pictured lying bloodied on the floor in France, has openly expressed his gratitude for French the policeman who gave him life-saving resuscitation.

Chief Brigadier Patrice Martin has reportedly kept in touch with Andrew's family and had plans to visit them in Portsmouth.

A second England fan, Stewart Gray, of Hinckley, Leicestershire, was also left in a coma after being attacked by marauding Russian Ultras in France.

In June 2016, prosecutors said the hooligans behind the attacks will face attempted murder charges.

Footage filmed by the thugs themselves and posted online, as well as footage recorded by police, was being checked in a bid to identify the soccer savages.

French police announced the attackers would be met by the full force of French law - and could be hammered with life sentences.

Spartak and Lokomotiv Moscow "crews" left calling card stickers close to their bleeding victims in Marseille before England and Russia drew 1-1.

A group of 150 "highly trained" Russian Ultras wearing gum shields, martial arts fighting gloves and carrying telescopic batons, coshes and knives started the trouble.

A Marseille prosecutor’s office spokesman said yesterday: "Such facts have led to us investigating an attack on two England fans as attempted murder."

Three Russians involved in the fighting were jailed for up to two years but none of those directly involved in the most serious assaults were nailed.
