But one of her adorable pupils managed to put a smile back on her face with a touching letter about the dog when she got back to the classroom.

The schoolboy, known only as Callum, even penned an acrostic poem to pay tribute to tragic Charlie.

Sharing pics of the letter on Twitter, Gemma's daughter Lucie, said: "Mum's been so upset about the dog being put to sleep and stressing about having to go back into school today, and she got this from a wee boy in her class."

Adorable Callum apologised if the letter made his teacher emotional - and branded the pup a "great dog".

He said: "To Mrs Dunne, sorry if you don't like it or it makes you emotional.

"I'm sorry about your dog. I want to say that your dog was cheeky, happy, adorable, relative, lucky, incredible and energetic.

"But most of all I know your dog was special and your dog is in a better place and is looking over you.

"Charlie was a great dog. From Callum."

The post has already racked up more than 4,000 retweets and almost 29,000 likes as social media users gush over the schoolboy's sweet gesture.

One Twitter user said: "Whoever Callum's parents are they need a good pat on the back for raising a lovely, thoughtful child."

Layla Medina added: "So sad to hear about the dog but bless little Callum!

"I hope that he stays sweet even when he grows up, the world needs people like him.

"His parents are bringing him up well."

And Ian Kirwan wrote: "There's hope for us yet with pupils as thoughtful and sweet as Callum in this world."

Last year, an eight-year-old schoolgirl hit headlines after writing a for "forgetting" to build a swing for her disabled twin brother.

Little Naomi Gwynne penned the letter after finding brother Isaac was unable to use the swings after new equipment was installed at the local park.
