Just as he did when he said corrupt and skint Venezuela’s “achievements” were “cause for celebration”.
Or when he invited IRA representatives to Parliament, two weeks after the Brighton bombing.
Or in the Falklands War — a “Tory plot” — and when he blamed Nato for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Or when he made paid appearances on Iranian state TV, just five years ago, despite the channel having already been banned after it filmed the detention and torture of a journalist.
This man cannot be allowed the key to No10.
Max attacks
A FREE Press is vital to a free society.
This is what makes the letter that arrived at our and other newspapers’ offices this week, from former F1 boss Max Mosley, so terrifying.
Using data protection laws never intended to apply to journalists, he wants us to never again report either the court case revealing he’d enjoyed an S&M orgy with five prostitutes, nor that he is behind significant funding to the state-approved Press regulator Impress.
It is fundamentally in the public interest for you, our readers, to know both Mr Mosley’s reason for his hatred of newspapers, and the way in which it appears he is seeking his revenge.
If we were to bow to him — or if he follows through on his threat to sue us, and wins — we would be offering a Get Out Of Jail Free card to exactly the people that we need to be scrutinising.
Formula One ends use of Grid Girls at Grand Prix races days after darts drops walk-on models
Mosley isn’t all bad. When he was boss of Formula One, he refused to give in to the snowflakes and kept grid girls, for instance. Perhaps he’s always had a thing for girls in uniform.
But his threat to gag the Press is very dangerous indeed.
