What did David Lammy say about Stacey Dooley and Comic Relief?
London-born Lammy has been MP for Tottenham since 2000
DAVID Lammy is a Labour MP who was the youngest member of Parliament when he was first elected in 2000.
Let’s take a closer look at the 45-year-old Londoner’s life and career.
Who is David Lammy?
Lammy was born in Tottenham in 1972 and was raised by his single mother from the age of 12.
He became the first black Brit to study at Harvard University after winning a place at their prestigious law school.
Lammy practised as a lawyer from 1994, eventually becoming a barrister, before winning a by-election in June, 2000, to become the MP for Tottenham – a seat he has held ever since.
The 45-year-old dated TV presenter June Sarpong in the early 2000s.
The MP married artist Nicola Green in 2005. The couple have three children together.
TV presenter Trisha Goddard has thrown her support behind Lammy, calling Dooley's Instagram photo and caption "disturbing".
She told Good Morning Britain: "I do think that that one photo with 'obsessed'... I mean, that's what the Kardashians say about a pair of shoes."
Goddard added she thought Dooley was spearheading some "great work".
What did he say about Stacey Dooley and Comic Relief?
Lammy has denied snubbing Comic Relief after the charity said he refused its offer to make a charity film in Africa.
Instead he claimed Comic Relief had "fallen short" of what he called its "public duty" to promote racial equality and serve minority communities.
It came after he accused Strictly Come Dancing star Stacey Dooley of perpetuating "tired and unhelpful stereotypes" after she travelled to Uganda for a documentary ahead of Red Nose Day.
He said Stacey had failed to "educate herself", adding: "Her Instagram conveys the age-old trope that is her as the heroine and the black child as the victim and we have to stop it".
Has David Lammy ever been a government minister?
When New Labour were in power under the leadership of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, Lammy held a number of government positions.
His ministerial roles include Minister in the Department for Constitutional Affairs, Minister for Culture at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and Minister for Higher Education in the new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Lammy also voted in favour of the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
In September 2014, the proud Londoner announced his intention to seek the Labour nomination for the 2016 mayoral election.
During the selection process, Lammy finished fourth in the race which was eventually won by current London mayor Sadiq Khan.
