Britain’s most notorious criminals cost taxpayers record £219-a-night
Holding a lag at top-security Whitemoor jail, Cambridgeshire, is £219-a-night, the same as a Hilton hotel in London
BRITAIN’S most dangerous convicts are costing a record £80,000 a year each to keep behind bars.
Holding a lag at top-security Whitemoor jail is £219 a night, the same as a Hilton hotel in London.
Last year, the cost was £77,000 a year per lag.
The jail in March, Cambridgeshire, holds killers, rapists and terrorists.
They include Zia Ul Haq, jailed for 18 years in 2007 for trying to bomb London’s Underground.
Glyn Travis, assistant secretary of the Prison Officers Association, said: “The cost of holding the most dangerous prisoners is astronomical.”
