Last year, the cost was £77,000 a year per lag.

The jail in March, Cambridgeshire, holds killers, rapists and terrorists.

They include Zia Ul Haq, jailed for 18 years in 2007 for trying to bomb London’s Underground.

Glyn Travis, assistant secretary of the Prison Officers Association, said: “The cost of holding the most dangerous prisoners is astronomical.”

Youth offender costs are up too.

The highest — at Feltham, Middlesex — rose from £73,058 to £74,165, the National Offender Management Service says.
